Explanation
ทำจาก combines ทำ, “to make,” with จาก, “from.” Its basic pattern is “finished item + ทำจาก + material or ingredient.” Thai does not need a separate passive form here. Depending on the sentence, ทำจาก can mean either “make from” or “be made from.” It covers both English “made of,” where the material remains recognizable, and “made from,” where it has been substantially transformed. When the maker is the subject, the pattern can be “person + ทำ + finished item + จาก + material.”
Usage
Commonly used to describe the material of furniture, clothing, containers, and other products, as well as the ingredients used to make food and drinks. It also appears in product descriptions, manufacturing explanations, and discussions of recycled goods. ทำจากอะไร, “What is it made of?”, is a particularly useful question pattern.
Caution
ทำจาก identifies the material or ingredient that becomes the finished product. To name a tool or method used in making something, use ด้วย instead; for example, ทำด้วยมีด means “make it using a knife.” For a film based on a novel or true story, ดัดแปลงจาก (“adapted from”) or สร้างจาก (“created based on”) is usually more natural.
