Explanation
โอที is a Thai transcription of the English abbreviation “OT” (overtime). It is extremely common in everyday workplace language. The standard phrase is ทำโอที, meaning “to work overtime.” For example, ทำโอทีสองชั่วโมง means “to work two hours of overtime.” Depending on context, โอที can also mean overtime pay. ค่าโอที makes the monetary meaning explicit. In regulations, contracts, and legal writing, การทำงานล่วงเวลา is generally preferred for overtime work, while ค่าล่วงเวลา is used for overtime pay.
Usage
It is commonly used in offices, factories, and shops when discussing overtime schedules, permission to work extra hours, the amount of overtime worked, or overtime pay. It is especially common in conversations between coworkers and relatively informal internal messages.
Caution
To say “work overtime,” normally use ทำโอที rather than treating โอที as a verb. Also, ได้โอที may mean either getting the opportunity to work overtime or receiving overtime pay. Use ได้ค่าโอที or ได้เงินค่าโอที when you need to make the payment meaning explicit.
