นาน

Explanation

The central idea of temporal นาน is an extended amount of time from beginning to end. It commonly follows a verb: รอนาน “wait a long time,” อยู่นาน “stay a long time,” and คุยนาน “talk for a long time.” นานไหม asks whether something is long or takes long, while นานแค่ไหน asks how long. The pattern verb + มา + นานแล้ว is especially useful for an action or state continuing from the past into the present. For example, รอมานานแล้ว means “have been waiting for a long time.” With a completed event, นานแล้ว may instead mean “a long time ago.” The repeated form นานๆ depends on its construction. อยู่นานๆ means “stay a long time,” whereas นานๆ ครั้ง means “once in a while.” The food word นาน “naan” is an unrelated loanword that happens to have the same spelling and pronunciation.

Usage

It is common when discussing waiting time, travel time, or how long a task takes. It also describes the duration of a stay, residence, relationship, or a long gap since people last met. นานๆ ครั้ง is an everyday way to say that activities such as eating out, traveling, or exercising happen only occasionally. The noun นาน is mainly seen on Indian restaurant menus and used when ordering food.

Caution

Use นาน for length in time. For the physical length of a road, hair, rope, or another object, use ยาว. Also, repeated นานๆ does not always mean “occasionally.” With ครั้ง or ที it indicates low frequency, but in an expression such as อยู่นานๆ it means “for a long time.”
