จะตาย consists of จะ, which marks futurity, intention, or likelihood, and ตาย, “to die.” Literally, it says that a person or animal will die or appears likely to die. Adding กำลัง, as in กำลังจะตาย, makes the sense of being on the verge of death more explicit. In conversation, the pattern “description or feeling + จะตาย” is extremely common. It is usually hyperbole rather than a reference to actual death: หิวจะตาย means “I’m starving,” เหนื่อยจะตาย means “I’m exhausted,” and คิดถึงจะตาย means “I miss you terribly.” It can also follow positive descriptions, as in ดีจะตาย or อร่อยจะตาย. In some contexts, this carries a mildly argumentative tone such as “It’s really good!” or “But it’s so delicious!”

Usage

The literal use occurs when discussing whether a person or animal may die, such as during an illness or emergency. It is especially natural when speaking dramatically with people you know well.

Use word order and context to distinguish literal death from exaggeration. ปลากำลังจะตาย refers to an animal actually dying, while หิวจะตาย normally just means “I’m starving.” The intensifying use is highly conversational and emotionally charged. มาก is safer in formal speech and writing. Hyperbolic จะตาย may also sound insensitive when people are discussing a real illness, accident, or bereavement.
