Explanation

เอก comes from the Pali–Sanskrit tradition and is built around the idea of “one” or “first.” In modern Thai, it is more useful to learn it through complete compounds such as พระเอก “male lead,” วิชาเอก “major,” ปริญญาเอก “doctorate,” and พลเอก “army general” than as an independent word. เอก, โท, and ตรี also form ranking sets, but their exact order and translation depend on the particular system. เอก is additionally used as the personal name or nickname Aek; as a name, it is not translated.

Usage

It commonly appears when discussing leading characters in films or stories, university majors and degrees, military or police ranks in official contexts, and Thai tone rules in language classes.

Caution

Do not use เอก as the ordinary number “one” in modern conversation; use หนึ่ง. เรียนเอก can mean either “major in a subject” or “study for a doctorate,” so clarify it with wording such as เรียนเอกภาษาไทย or เรียนปริญญาเอก when needed. Also, the mark ไม้เอก (่) does not automatically produce a low tone in every syllable; the resulting tone depends on consonant class and other tone rules.
