Learning notes

Explanation

ห้องน้ำ is formed from ห้อง (“room”) and น้ำ (“water”). In many Thai homes, the shower and toilet occupy the same room, so Thai does not always make the same sharp distinction between a toilet and a bathing room that some languages do. On a sign in a restaurant or station, ห้องน้ำ normally means “restroom.” In descriptions of homes or hotel rooms, it often means “bathroom.” It is a neutral, standard term used in both conversation and public signage. When counting these rooms, ห้อง is used as the classifier: ห้องน้ำสองห้อง means “two bathrooms/restrooms.”

Usage

It is commonly used to ask where the restroom is, to say that someone is going to the restroom, and on public signs. It is also used when discussing whether a hotel room or home has a bathroom and how many bathrooms it has.

Caution

ห้องน้ำ names the room or facility; it does not mean “to bathe.” Use อาบน้ำ for taking a shower or bath. Also, ไปห้องน้ำ normally means “go to the restroom,” not “go take a bath.”
