Learning notes
Explanation
This is the standard occupational term used in both everyday speech and formal legal contexts. In conversation, it is often shortened to ทนาย. Common combinations include ปรึกษาทนายความ (“consult a lawyer”) and จ้างทนายความ (“hire a lawyer”). Because it refers to a person, it is counted with คน, as in ทนายความสองคน (“two lawyers”).
Usage
It is commonly used when discussing legal advice, court cases, contracts, inheritance, divorce, property disputes, corporate legal work, or a person’s occupation.
Caution
Do not confuse it with อัยการ, which means “public prosecutor.” Also, a นักกฎหมาย is a legal professional in a broader sense and is not necessarily licensed to practice as an attorney.
