ทักษะ is a noun for practical ability: not merely knowing something, but being able to apply that knowledge in an activity. It can describe language, computer, workplace, communication, problem-solving, and many other skills. It is a standard word and is especially common in education, training, recruitment, and professional development. Frequent combinations include มีทักษะ “have a skill,” ฝึกทักษะ “practice a skill,” พัฒนาทักษะ “develop a skill,” and ใช้ทักษะ “use a skill.” The word is of Pali-Sanskrit origin. When counting distinct skills, อย่าง can be used, as in ทักษะหนึ่งอย่าง “one skill” and ทักษะหลายอย่าง “several skills.”

Usage

Caution

Do not use ทักษะ simply for knowledge someone possesses; ความรู้ means “knowledge.” Use ทักษะ when the focus is on being able to apply knowledge or perform an activity.
