Explanation
The central image is something spreading beyond a single type or normal boundary. In the sense of variety, หลาก often comes before the feature being varied, as in หลากชนิด “various kinds,” หลากรูปแบบ “various forms,” and หลากสี “various colors.” The expanded form หลากหลาย is more flexible and broadly used. As a verb, it is associated mainly with water that rises unusually quickly and spreads or rushes beyond its normal limits. The poorly supported sense “strange” or “amazing” is not included as a useful modern learner meaning.
Usage

Caution
หลาก does not simply mean “many.” มาก emphasizes a large amount, หลาย indicates several or many items, and หลาก emphasizes variety among types or characteristics. As a verb, หลาก does not describe ordinary flowing water. น้ำไหล means that water flows, while น้ำหลาก suggests rising water that surges or spreads beyond its usual bounds.
