Explanation

ป่า is an ordinary word for a forest; it does not necessarily mean untouched wilderness or dense tropical jungle. เข้าไปในป่า means “go into the forest,” and ทำลายป่า means “destroy forests.” In the sense “wild,” it follows an animal or plant noun. สัตว์ป่า means “wild animals,” and กล้วยไม้ป่า means “wild orchids.” It also forms part of established animal names, such as หมูป่า, “wild boar.” แห่ง can be used as a classifier when referring to forests as places. ป่าแห่งนี้ means “this forest.”

Usage

You will hear ป่า in conversations about hiking, camping, and getting lost in the woods, as well as news about forest fires and conservation. It also appears in discussions of wildlife and plants growing in their natural habitat.

Caution

สัตว์ป่า means “wild animals,” while สัตว์ในป่า means “animals in the forest.” The first describes a category of animals; the second describes their location. Do not use ป่า to compliment someone as adventurous or rugged. คนป่า can sound derogatory, and ป่าเถื่อน means “barbaric” or “lawless.”
