Learning notes
Explanation
แข็งแรง combines แข็ง (“hard” or “strong”) and แรง (“force” or “strength”), but it normally functions as a single word meaning healthy, robust, or sturdy. For people, it suggests not only freedom from illness but also adequate strength and good physical functioning. สุขภาพแข็งแรง refers to good health, while ร่างกายแข็งแรง describes a strong, healthy body. For objects and buildings, it refers to structural strength. It can also describe healthy plant growth and, figuratively, a sound economy or strong organization. As a Thai adjective, it can serve directly as the predicate in เขาแข็งแรง, “He is healthy and strong.” When modifying a noun, it often appears in patterns such as โครงสร้างที่แข็งแรง, “a strong structure.” แข็งแรงขึ้น means “to become stronger or healthier.”
Usage
Commonly used when discussing health, exercise, diet, children’s development, or recovery from illness. ขอให้สุขภาพแข็งแรง, “Wishing you good health,” is a standard expression in birthday and New Year wishes. It is also used for sturdy furniture, sound building structures, and healthy plant growth. In news and business contexts, it can describe a strong economy, organization, or community.
Caution
แข็งแรง describes health, overall physical robustness, or structural strength. For force or the ability to exert effort in a particular moment, แรง or มีแรง may be more appropriate. แข็ง by itself usually means “hard,” “stiff,” or “rigid,” so it cannot generally replace แข็งแรง. Also, แข็งแรง describes something that is healthy; it does not normally mean “health-promoting.” For example, “healthy food” is usually อาหารเพื่อสุขภาพ, not อาหารแข็งแรง.
