Explanation

The central image of แข็ง is resistance: something does not easily bend, yield, or change its state. Its most basic use describes physical hardness, as in a hard bed or hard rice. It can also function as a verb for a material becoming solid or set, such as cement hardening. From the idea of not yielding, it extends to a strong team, a stern tone, an unyielding attitude, and a strong currency. The most natural English translation therefore depends heavily on the noun it describes.

Usage

แข็ง is very common in everyday descriptions of furniture, food, fabric, muscles, and building materials. In sports and competition, it can describe a strong player, team, or opponent. In interpersonal situations, it appears in expressions such as เสียงแข็ง for a stern tone and ใจแข็ง for resisting sympathy. In financial news, it is used for currency appreciation, especially in the expression แข็งค่า.

Caution

แข็ง is not a general replacement for every use of “strong.” Use แรง for strong force, intensity, smells, or effects; เก่ง for skill or ability; แข็งแรง for physical health and robustness; and เข้มแข็ง for emotional or organizational strength. น้ำแข็ง is the complete word for “ice”; แข็ง alone does not mean “ice.” Also, คอแข็ง can literally mean having a stiff neck, but idiomatically it may describe someone who can hold their liquor.
