Explanation
เตียง is the standard, neutral word for a bed. It is used for beds at home or in hotels, as well as hospital beds and sleeping berths on trains. เตียงนอน explicitly means a bed for sleeping, but เตียง alone is normally sufficient. Beds are commonly counted with หลัง, as in เตียงหนึ่งหลัง (“one bed”). เตียง itself can also be used as the classifier, as in เตียงหนึ่งเตียง. In descriptions such as โรงพยาบาลขนาด 100 เตียง, the number of beds indicates a hospital’s patient capacity.
Usage
It is used when discussing bedroom furniture at home or in a hotel, hospital beds and patient capacity, and sleeping berths on trains. Common combinations include นอนบนเตียง (“sleep on the bed”), ขึ้นเตียง (“get onto the bed”), and ลงจากเตียง (“get out of the bed”).
Caution
Do not confuse เตียง with ที่นอน. เตียง usually refers to the bed as a whole, while ที่นอน most often refers to the mattress placed on it. In hotel descriptions, เตียงคู่ can sometimes be ambiguous; เตียงใหญ่ clearly indicates one large bed, while เตียงเดี่ยวสองเตียง indicates two single beds.
