Explanation
The word is formed from เงิน “money,” ปัน “to divide or distribute,” and ผล “result, return, or profit.” It can therefore be understood as money distributed from earnings. It is a standard financial and investment term. Besides corporate dividends paid to shareholders, it may also describe distributions of surplus made by cooperatives or similar organizations to their members. Common combinations include จ่ายเงินปันผล “pay a dividend,” ได้รับเงินปันผล “receive a dividend,” and ประกาศจ่ายเงินปันผล “announce a dividend payment.”
Usage
It commonly appears in discussions of stock investing, corporate earnings, shareholder meetings, and financial news, especially when describing whether a dividend will be paid, how much it will be, or when it will be distributed. It is also used for profit distributions by cooperatives.
Caution
Do not confuse เงินปันผล with ดอกเบี้ย, which means interest on deposits or loans. เงินปันผล refers only to the portion of earnings actually distributed, not the company’s total profit or gains made by selling shares at a higher price.
