Explanation

โกรธ is the standard, broadly useful word for being angry. It works in both conversation and writing and can describe either visible anger or anger that someone keeps inside. Like many Thai words describing feelings and states, it can serve directly as the predicate: ฉันโกรธ means “I'm angry.” The person someone is angry with normally follows it directly, as in โกรธเขา, without an additional preposition. The reason can be introduced with เรื่อง or ที่, as in โกรธเรื่องอะไร (“What are you angry about?”) and โกรธที่เขาโกหก (“be angry that he lied”). Common patterns include ไม่โกรธ (“not be angry”), หายโกรธ (“stop being angry”), and ทำให้โกรธ (“make someone angry”).

Usage

It is commonly used when discussing arguments, misunderstandings, broken promises, or rude behavior, as well as when asking about someone's mood. Expressions such as อย่าโกรธนะ (“Please don't be angry”) and ยังโกรธอยู่ไหม (“Are you still angry?”) are also common when apologizing or trying to make up.

Caution

The person someone is angry with normally follows โกรธ directly: use โกรธเขา rather than โกรธกับเขา. Also, โกรธ describes anger, often as a temporary feeling; it should not be confused with เกลียด, which means “hate” or “dislike.”
