Learning notes
Explanation
ทุเลา centers on an unfavorable condition decreasing in severity or intensity. It is especially common with physical symptoms such as pain, fever, and coughing, but it can also describe rain or storms. It frequently appears as ทุเลาลง, with ลง making the downward change in intensity explicit. The verb is normally intransitive, with the symptom or weather condition as its subject. To name a cause, Thai commonly uses ช่วยให้ followed by the condition and ทุเลาลง.
Usage
It is commonly used when pain or other symptoms ease after medicine or rest, or when rain or a storm loses intensity. It is also natural in medical explanations and weather reports.
Caution
ทุเลา does not mean that the condition has disappeared completely. Use หายแล้ว for recovery from illness and ฝนหยุดแล้ว when the rain has stopped. For general improvement not involving a reduction in something adverse, ดีขึ้น is usually more natural.
