The central idea of อาการ is an underlying condition becoming observable. Its most common use concerns health and medicine. Common patterns include มีอาการ followed by a symptom or condition, อาการดีขึ้น (“the symptoms improve”), อาการหนักขึ้น (“the condition becomes more serious”), and ดูอาการ (“monitor the condition”). In ออกอาการ followed by an emotion or state, the word describes that feeling becoming visible through someone’s behavior. With vehicles or machines, it refers to signs of a problem, such as unusual noise or movement.

Usage

It is very common when describing symptoms at a clinic or discussing a patient’s condition and recovery. In everyday conversation, it is also used when intoxication, fatigue, nervousness, or jealousy becomes noticeable, and when a vehicle or machine shows signs of malfunction.

Caution

อาการ does not normally name the disease itself. For example, โรคไข้หวัด is a disease, while coughing and fever are อาการ. For a general situation, use สถานการณ์; for the overall condition of a person or object without emphasis on observable symptoms or abnormal behavior, สภาพ is often more natural.
