The core idea of แปลก is that something differs from what is normal, expected, or already familiar. It is not always negative: it can describe an unusual flavor or something rarely seen, though context may give it the more critical sense of “weird.” As a Thai stative adjective, it can serve directly as the predicate, as in เขาแปลก, “He is strange.” It follows a noun when modifying it, as in เสียงแปลก, “a strange sound.” The repeated form แปลก ๆ is very common in conversation. It softens the description and often means that something feels “a little odd” or “somehow strange.” The pattern แปลกที่… means “It is strange that…,” while ไม่แปลกที่… means “It is not surprising that…” or “No wonder….”

Usage

It is widely used in everyday conversation when someone behaves differently than usual, when a sound or smell seems odd, or when describing an unfamiliar object, flavor, place, or event. It also appears in expressions that judge an outcome as surprising or unsurprising.

Caution

คนแปลก means “a strange person” and can sound insulting. Use คนแปลกหน้า for “a stranger” or “an unfamiliar person.” For a neutral statement that two things are different, ต่างกัน or ไม่เหมือนกัน is usually more natural.
