This is a loanword from English “chef” and is gender-neutral. It is not limited to fine dining; it can refer broadly to a professional cook working in a restaurant, hotel, or specialty food business. Depending on context, it may specifically mean the chef who leads the kitchen. The classifier for people, คน, is used when counting: เชฟสองคน means “two chefs.” Common patterns include เป็นเชฟ “be a chef,” ทำงานเป็นเชฟ “work as a chef,” and อยากเป็นเชฟ “want to become a chef.” เชฟ can also precede a name or nickname as a professional title, as in เชฟต้น “Chef Ton,” or be used by itself to address a chef directly.
