Learning notes

Explanation

The central idea of ดิบ is that an expected transformation has not yet taken place. For meat or fish, that transformation is cooking; for fruit, ripening; for oil or data, refining or processing; and for creative work or ability, polishing and development. It normally follows the noun it modifies, as in เนื้อดิบ (raw meat), มะม่วงดิบ (unripe mango), and ข้อมูลดิบ (raw data). สุก is its common opposite when talking about food and fruit. อาหารสุก is cooked food, while ผลไม้สุก is ripe fruit. When applied to someone's skill or work, ดิบ may sound critical, suggesting inexperience or an unfinished result. In music and art, however, it can be complimentary, describing something direct, powerful, and intentionally unpolished.

Usage

ดิบ is common in cooking and dining contexts when discussing whether meat, fish, or eggs have been cooked. It is also used at markets and in the kitchen to describe fruit that has not yet ripened. In industry and the news, it appears in น้ำมันดิบ (crude oil), while research, computing, and statistics commonly use ข้อมูลดิบ (raw data). It can also describe the unfinished or deliberately raw quality of art, music, writing, and personal skills.

Caution

ดิบ does not cover every meaning of English “raw” or “live.” Use สด when the intended sense is fresh or live—for example, เบียร์สด for draft beer and ถ่ายทอดสด for a live broadcast. Directly describing a person as ดิบ can imply that they are crude or uncivilized and may sound insulting. Learners should use it most confidently with food, fruit, materials, and data, where the intended meaning is clear.

  • สด means fresh or newly made. ดิบ focuses on food being uncooked, not on how fresh it is.

  • ไม่สุก explicitly means “not cooked through.” ดิบ is the compact adjective commonly placed after a food noun to mean raw or uncooked.
