The word is formed from ผู้, which indicates a person who performs an action, and อ่าน, “to read.” Its literal sense is therefore “a person who reads.” Thai nouns do not normally change form for number, so ผู้อ่าน can refer to one reader or multiple readers depending on context. The usual classifier for counting readers is คน; ท่าน may be used when showing respect. For example, ผู้อ่านคนหนึ่ง means “one particular reader,” while ผู้อ่านทุกท่าน respectfully addresses “all readers.” It is a neutral standard term and is often contrasted with ผู้เขียน, “writer” or “author.”
