บุตรี

Explanation

บุตรี means a female child in relation to her parents. Its basic meaning is the same as the everyday term ลูกสาว, but its tone is considerably more formal. The pattern บุตรีของ + person means “the daughter of ...” and is common in formal biographical descriptions. It is counted with คน: บุตรีสองคน means “two daughters.” บุตร is a formal word for a child or offspring, while บุตรี specifically identifies the child as female.

Usage

It is most often used in biographies, official documents, news reports, obituaries, wedding announcements, and other formal descriptions of family relationships. It can also convey the polished tone of “the daughter of” when introducing a prominent family.

Caution

In ordinary conversation, ลูกสาว is the natural choice. Using บุตรี casually may sound overly stiff or grand. It should also not automatically replace specialized royal terms such as พระราชธิดา for a king’s daughter.
