ผู้ป่วย is formed from ผู้, which marks a person associated with an action or state, and ป่วย, meaning “to be ill.” It therefore literally describes a person who is ill. It is the standard term for “patient” in hospitals and clinics and is also common in medical explanations, signs, news reports, and official announcements. Its tone is neutral and respectful. The usual classifier for counting patients as people is คน. In statistics, reports, and administrative language, ราย may also be used to count individual cases or patients.
