Learning notes

Explanation

ฟรี is a loanword from English “free.” In Thai, its central meaning is that no payment or fee is required. After a noun, it describes the item or service as free, as in อาหารฟรี (“free food”). After a verb, it shows that the action costs nothing, as in เรียนฟรี (“study for free”). Advertisements also commonly use ฟรี! by itself to mean “Free!” In informal expressions such as ตายฟรี, the meaning is not financial. It means that something happens “in vain” or “for nothing.”

Usage

It is extremely common in online shopping, store advertisements, apps, events, schools, and hotels when announcing free shipping, admission, trials, meals, or other services. In everyday conversation, it is also used when someone receives something or uses a service without paying. The “in vain” sense appears in informal discussion of pointless or unjustified negative outcomes.

Caution

ฟรี does not cover every meaning of English “free.” Use อิสระ for freedom or independence, and normally use ว่าง when someone is available or has free time. To say that a product contains no particular ingredient, Thai usually uses a phrase such as ไม่มีน้ำตาล (“contains no sugar”) rather than ฟรี alone.

Differences from similar words

1 free synonyms

  • ไม่เสียค่าใช้จ่าย explicitly means that no expense is involved and has a neutral tone. ฟรี is shorter and especially common in advertisements and everyday language.

2 in vain synonyms

  • เปล่าประโยชน์ directly means “useless” or “unproductive” and is more broadly applicable. ฟรี conveys “for nothing” informally in expressions such as ตายฟรี.
