Explanation

The usual pattern is “condition, instruction, or recommendation + มิฉะนั้น + the consequence of not meeting or following it.” The following clause often contains จะ (“will”), อาจ (“may”), or ไม่ได้ (“cannot”). Although มิ conveys formal negation and ฉะนั้น relates to “in that way” or “therefore,” learners will find it most useful to memorize มิฉะนั้น as a single connective expression. It has a somewhat formal tone but is not obsolete. It remains common in modern rules, notices, instructions, and professional writing.

Usage

It is common in rules, public notices, manuals, medication warnings, and workplace instructions, especially when explaining a risk or unfavorable consequence. In conversation, it is useful for a formal-sounding warning or carefully structured explanation.

Caution

The clause after มิฉะนั้น must describe the consequence of the preceding condition not being met. It does not simply mean “but” or “on the other hand.” In relaxed everyday conversation, ไม่อย่างนั้น or ไม่งั้น often sounds more natural.
