Explanation
กวาง is the ordinary, neutral noun for deer in general. The usual classifier for counting deer is ตัว, as in กวางสองตัว, “two deer.” A herd of deer can be called ฝูงกวาง. เนื้อกวาง means “venison.” กวาง is also used as a Thai nickname; in that context, it refers to a person named Kwang rather than the animal.
Usage
It is used when discussing deer in settings such as zoos, forests, wildlife programs, and stories. In conversations about people, it may also appear as the nickname Kwang.
Caution
กวาง is a general term for deer. It should not be confused with names for particular animals, such as เก้ง “muntjac,” or with แอนทีโลป “antelope.” To clearly mean the meat, use เนื้อกวาง.
