Explanation
The usual pattern is สะพาย followed by the object being carried. It commonly occurs with กระเป๋า “bag,” เป้ “backpack,” กล้อง “camera,” and ปืน “gun.” The most natural English translation depends on the object and position: สะพายกระเป๋า means “carry or wear a bag over the shoulder,” สะพายเป้ means “wear a backpack,” and สะพายกระเป๋าข้ามตัว means “wear a bag across the body.” In each case, the shoulder supports the object or its strap.
Usage
Used when someone puts on or carries a shoulder bag, backpack, camera, gun, or another strapped object. It is also common when describing what a person is wearing or carrying.
Caution
This is not a general verb for carrying. Use ถือ for holding something in the hand and แบก when emphasizing a heavy load borne on the shoulder or back. สะพาย is also not normally used for figuratively “carrying” responsibilities or debt.
