Explanation

สภาวะ describes an abstract condition rather than merely the visible appearance of something. It is often used for physical or mental states, economic and social conditions, and scientific phenomena. Common patterns include สภาวะ followed by a field or type of condition, and อยู่ในสภาวะ followed by a state. For example, สภาวะเศรษฐกิจ means “economic conditions,” while อยู่ในสภาวะเครียด means “to be under stress.” The word is of Pali origin. It can have a more specialized sense relating to the inherent nature of things in Buddhist or philosophical writing, but most learners can understand its everyday core meaning as “an abstract or objectively described state.”

Usage

It commonly appears in news reports about economic or social conditions, medical and psychological descriptions of physical or mental states, and scientific discussions of conditions such as zero gravity. It is especially natural in objective, analytical, or formal language.

Caution

Although สภาวะ, สภาพ, and ภาวะ can all correspond to “state” or “condition,” they are not freely interchangeable. Established expressions often require ภาวะ, as in ภาวะฉุกเฉิน “state of emergency” and ภาวะตั้งครรภ์ “pregnancy.” It is best to learn these expressions as fixed combinations.
