เครียด conveys the image of the mind or nerves being under pressure and unable to relax. It is a very common everyday word and is neither especially formal nor slang. It can function directly as the predicate of a sentence: ฉันเครียด means “I’m stressed,” with no เป็น required. The cause can be introduced with เครียดเรื่อง followed by the matter causing stress, or with เครียดเพราะ followed by a reason. The related noun ความเครียด means “stress.”
Usage
Commonly used when discussing pressure from work, school, exams, money, relationships, or uncertainty about the future. It also describes tense expressions, strained voices, serious meetings, and uncomfortable atmospheres.
Caution
It does not simply mean “busy” or “tired”; it implies psychological pressure. For excited anticipation, ตื่นเต้น is usually more appropriate. To say that someone is stressed, use เครียด directly or มีความเครียด—not มีเครียด.
