Explanation
มนุษยธรรม combines มนุษย, “human,” with ธรรม, “moral principle” or “virtue.” Its basic image is the moral standard people should follow in treating other human beings. It goes beyond personal kindness. It emphasizes respect for every person’s life and dignity and the humane treatment of people who are suffering. The word is relatively formal and is common in news, government, and international-aid contexts. Although it is a noun, it often appears in phrases such as ด้านมนุษยธรรม “in humanitarian terms,” ทางมนุษยธรรม “humanitarian,” and ตามหลักมนุษยธรรม “according to humanitarian principles.”
Usage
It is commonly used when discussing aid for victims of war or disasters, the protection of refugees or prisoners, food and medical relief, and criticism of acts that violate human dignity. It is more typical of social, legal, or international issues than ordinary acts of kindness.
Caution
Do not confuse มนุษยธรรม with มนุษยชาติ, “humankind,” or สิทธิมนุษยชน, “human rights.” It also does not normally mean “humanism” as a philosophical worldview. For ordinary personal kindness, ความมีน้ำใจ or ความเมตตา is often more natural.
