The core idea is getting through danger or difficulty without suffering the worst outcome. รอดชีวิต is commonly used for surviving a threat to life, หนีรอด for successfully getting away, and เอาตัวรอด for protecting oneself or finding a way through a difficult situation. อยู่รอด can refer not only to people and animals staying alive but also to a company, institution, or activity continuing to exist. In conversation, the danger or problem is often left unstated, as in รอดไหม “Will it make it?” and ไม่รอด “It won’t survive/work out.”

Usage

It is common when talking about surviving accidents, disasters, or serious illness; escaping harm, arrest, or punishment; and making it through financial or practical hardship. It is also used to discuss whether a company, project, or other organization can stay afloat.

Caution

Unlike หนี, which describes the act of fleeing, รอด indicates that the escape or avoidance was successful. ไม่รอด can mean anything from “it won’t work out” to “they won’t survive” or “they won’t get away with it,” so it can sound harsh when used about a person. Do not confuse รอด with ลอด, which means to pass through or under a narrow space.
