Explanation
สบายดีไหม is a basic expression for asking whether someone is doing well. สบายดี means “to be well,” and ไหม is a sentence-final particle that turns the statement into a yes-or-no question. Together, the phrase functions much like “How are you?” It can be used by itself among friends. For polite speech, a male speaker normally says สบายดีไหมครับ, while a female speaker says สบายดีไหมคะ. A typical reply is สบายดี, meaning “I’m fine.” Someone who is not feeling very well might answer ไม่ค่อยสบาย, meaning “I’m not feeling very well.”
Usage
Common when meeting someone, getting in touch after some time, or asking about a family member or another person. After an illness or medical procedure, it can be a sincere inquiry about the person’s current health rather than merely a routine greeting.
Caution
Although it often serves as a routine greeting, it is grammatically a question about someone’s condition. After an illness, it does not by itself mean “Are you getting better?” To ask specifically about improvement, use an expression such as ดีขึ้นไหม, “Are you feeling better?”
