ฝาด

Explanation

The most common use concerns taste. It does not merely mean that something tastes unpleasant; it describes the dry, puckering sensation caused by tannins, often found in unripe fruit or strongly brewed tea. รสฝาด means “an astringent taste,” while ฝาดปาก describes an astringent feeling in the mouth. Another useful pattern combines ฝาด with ตา “eye” or หู “ear.” In ตาฝาด and หูฝาด, the word has nothing to do with taste and instead indicates an error of perception. ฝาด is also the name of a type of mangrove tree, but that botanical use is not common enough for most beginner or intermediate learners to prioritize.

Usage

It is commonly used when describing unripe bananas, persimmons, strongly brewed tea, and other foods or drinks that leave the mouth dry. Use ตาฝาด when your eyes may have played tricks on you and หูฝาด when you think you may have misheard something.

Caution

ฝาด is not the same as ขม “bitter,” and it is not normally used for the positive figurative sense of “subtle,” “sophisticated,” or “understated.” For errors of perception, learn it mainly in the fixed expressions ตาฝาด and หูฝาด rather than using ฝาด alone as a general verb meaning “deceive.”
