หูฝาด

Explanation

หู means “ear.” As a whole, หูฝาด is an idiomatic expression describing a moment when you doubt your own ears. It can refer to briefly imagining a sound, but it is also used when a statement is so surprising that you wonder whether you heard it correctly. It functions as a stative verb and can directly follow the subject, as in ฉันหูฝาด. Common conversational patterns include คงหูฝาดไปเอง (“I must have imagined hearing it”) and ฉันหูฝาดหรือเปล่า? (“Did I hear that wrong?”).

Usage

It is commonly used when you think someone called you, when you seem to hear an unexplained sound, or when a surprising remark makes you question your ears. It often conveys mild surprise or uncertainty in everyday conversation.

Caution

It does not mean “hard of hearing”; หูตึง is used for reduced hearing ability. It is also not normally used as a medical term for persistent auditory hallucinations.
