Explanation

The central image of โยน is moving something away from your side and toward another place or person. The basic pattern is โยน followed by the object. This physical image extends to expressions such as โยนความผิด, “shift the blame,” โยนงาน, “dump work on someone,” and โยนคำถาม, “pass a question to someone.” อ่อนโยน is a common compound meaning “gentle” or “tender,” but โยน does not have that meaning when used by itself.

Usage

It is common in everyday life and sports when throwing a ball, keys, a bag, or another object, as well as when tossing something into a container. In workplaces, meetings, and news reports, it is also used for shifting blame, dumping work on someone, or passing a question to another person.

Caution

For simply disposing of trash, ทิ้งขยะ is the natural expression. โยนขยะทิ้ง emphasizes carelessly tossing it away. โยนงานให้คนอื่น can sound critical because it suggests dumping work on someone. Use มอบหมายงาน when you mean assigning work neutrally or officially.
