Explanation
อาทิ signals that the items that follow are representative examples rather than a complete list. Its basic pattern is อาทิ followed by a list of nouns or noun phrases. It has a formal, written feel and is common in reports, news, public notices, and presentations. In everyday conversation, เช่น is usually more natural. The word historically also has the sense of “first” or “initial,” but that use is now mainly found in compounds and specialized or elevated writing. Most learners only need its example-introducing use.
Usage
It is used when listing representative services, activities, places, causes, or other members of a larger category. It is especially suitable for prepared or formal language such as reports, news, public information, and promotional copy.
Caution
อาทิ normally comes before the examples. To close a list with “and so on,” เป็นต้น is more natural. In casual speech, เช่น is generally preferred, especially when giving a single example. The combined form อาทิเช่น is also used, although either อาทิ or เช่น alone is often sufficient in concise writing.
