  1. 1 11 p.m.、23:00

A common Thai time expression meaning 11 p.m., or 23:00.

Learning notes

Explanation

The expression combines ห้า, “five,” with ทุ่ม, the counter used for evening hours. In this traditional Thai system, หนึ่งทุ่ม is 7 p.m., สองทุ่ม is 8 p.m., and the count continues from there. Accordingly, ห้าทุ่ม is 11 p.m. Although it is a time noun phrase, it commonly functions as a time expression without a preposition, as in เจอกันห้าทุ่ม, “Let’s meet at 11 p.m.” ตอนห้าทุ่ม is also natural.

Usage

It is commonly used in everyday conversation when discussing appointments, bedtime, closing times, or when a program or event starts at 11 p.m.

Caution

Despite ห้า meaning “five,” ห้าทุ่ม does not mean 5 a.m. Thai uses ตีห้า for 5 a.m. and สิบเอ็ดโมง for 11 a.m. Midnight is normally called เที่ยงคืน.
