Explanation
This is a well-established Thai loanword from English “dinosaur.” When counting individual dinosaurs, use the classifier ตัว: ไดโนเสาร์หนึ่งตัว means “one dinosaur,” and ไดโนเสาร์สองตัว means “two dinosaurs.” Use ชนิด when counting types, as in ไดโนเสาร์หลายชนิด, “many kinds of dinosaurs.” When applied to people or organizations, it becomes a negative metaphor suggesting that they are old-fashioned and resistant to change. It can also appear in modifying expressions such as ความคิดแบบไดโนเสาร์, meaning “dinosaur-like, outdated thinking.”
Usage
In its literal sense, it is common in conversations with children and in books, toys, museums, school lessons, movies, and other discussions of prehistoric life. The figurative sense appears in criticism or mockery of outdated attitudes, workplace practices, political institutions, technology, or people who resist change.
Caution
In scientific usage, flying reptiles such as pterosaurs and marine reptiles such as plesiosaurs are not dinosaurs, so avoid grouping all prehistoric reptiles under this word when accuracy matters. Calling a person or organization ไดโนเสาร์ is often mocking or derogatory and may be offensive when said directly to them.
