Explanation
The core idea of จำเจ is that something stays the same for so long that it becomes stale or tiresome. It normally carries a mildly negative judgment rather than merely stating that something happens repeatedly. It commonly describes ชีวิต “life,” งาน “work,” อาหาร “food,” เมนู “menu,” and กิจวัตร “routine.” It can directly follow a noun, as in อาหารจำเจ, or appear in a ที่ phrase, as in ชีวิตที่จำเจ. As a state word, it can also serve as the predicate, as in ชีวิตจำเจ, “Life is monotonous.” After an action, it may describe repeatedly experiencing the same familiar thing until it becomes tiresome.
Usage
Used for an unchanging daily life, repetitive work, meals with little variety, or lessons and programs that follow the same pattern every time. It is also useful when suggesting a change to keep an activity or experience fresh.
Caution
Do not use จำเจ when you only mean the neutral frequency “often”; use บ่อยๆ, or เป็นประจำ for a regular habit. Also, จำเจ describes the monotonous quality of something, whereas เบื่อ describes a person's feeling of being bored or fed up, so the two can naturally occur together.
