Explanation
The core image of วิ่ง is moving forward quickly. With people and animals, it means “run,” contrasting with เดิน, “walk.” It is common when talking about exercise, races, chasing, or escaping. The same verb is also used with cars, buses, trains, and other transportation. รถวิ่ง means that a car or vehicle is moving, while รถไฟวิ่ง can mean that a train is traveling or operating along a route.
Usage
It is commonly used for jogging, races, and descriptions of children or animals running. It is also used to discuss vehicles on the road and buses or trains operating along a route.
Caution
วิ่ง does not cover every figurative use of English “run.” For water, blood, and other liquids flowing, Thai normally uses ไหล. วิ่ง is also basically intransitive and does not normally take a direct object.
