Explanation

The core meaning is the postal system that accepts and delivers letters and parcels. With ทาง, as in ส่งทางไปรษณีย์ (“send by mail”), it describes the method of delivery. In a context involving movement to a place, as in ไปไปรษณีย์ (“go to the post office”), it refers to the post office itself. It also appears as the second element of compounds to mean “postal,” such as รหัสไปรษณีย์ (“postal code”). This follows normal Thai compound structure and does not need to be learned as a separate adjective sense. Post offices may be counted with แห่ง. Individual letters and parcels take the classifiers appropriate to จดหมาย and พัสดุ rather than a classifier for ไปรษณีย์ itself.

Usage

Used when sending letters or parcels, discussing deliveries, checking addresses or postal codes, and asking about a post office’s location or opening hours. At a post-office counter, expressions such as ส่งพัสดุทางไปรษณีย์ (“send a parcel by mail”) are useful.

Caution

ไปรษณีย์ does not normally name an individual piece of mail. Use จดหมาย for a letter and พัสดุ for a parcel. It also does not necessarily cover every private courier service; ขนส่ง or บริษัทขนส่ง may be more appropriate in that context. Use ที่ทำการไปรษณีย์ when you need to make “post office” fully explicit.
