Learning notes
Explanation
The word combines ผู้, which identifies a person doing something, with เล่น, meaning “to play.” It does not imply any particular skill level or professional status. For individual players, the usual classifier is คน: ผู้เล่นสามคน means “three players,” and ผู้เล่นคนนี้ means “this player.” In business contexts, ราย is commonly used instead. ผู้เล่นรายใหญ่ means “a major player” in a market or industry.
Usage
Common in descriptions of sports teams, matches, and game rules, especially when discussing player numbers. Business reporting also uses it for established competitors and new entrants in a market.
Caution
In a gambling context, it can refer to someone taking part, but the word itself does not imply gambling. นักพนัน is the usual explicit term for a gambler. For a playback device, such as a music player, use เครื่องเล่น.
