Explanation
A useful pattern is รดน้ำ followed by the thing being watered: รดน้ำต้นไม้ means “water the plants,” and รดน้ำผัก means “water the vegetables.” When the object is understood, รดน้ำ can stand alone. The same idea of wetting a target appears in ฉี่รดที่นอน, “wet the bed.” Here ฉี่ supplies the meaning of urination; รด itself does not mean “urinate.” The word also occurs in Songkran and wedding rituals. It describes the application of water; the meanings of respect or blessing come from the ritual.
Usage
You will commonly hear it when people discuss caring for houseplants, gardens, or vegetable beds, or ask someone to water them. It also appears in descriptions of Thai water-pouring ceremonies and in expressions about bedwetting.
Caution
Do not use รด for every action translated as “pour” or “spill.” Pouring water into a glass is เทน้ำใส่แก้ว, and accidentally spilling water is ทำน้ำหก.
