Explanation

The central idea of จืด is a lack of noticeable intensity. It is most commonly used for food that has little seasoning, especially too little salt. This is not always negative; it can also describe intentionally mild food eaten for health reasons. In น้ำจืด, the word identifies fresh water in contrast with น้ำเค็ม, salt water or seawater. It does not mean that the water tastes bad. The same idea extends to colors that lack vividness and to stories, jokes, or other things that feel flat. Like other Thai adjectives, จืด can function directly as the predicate: แกงนี้จืด means “This soup is bland.”

Usage

It is commonly used when commenting on seasoning during a meal or when discussing a preference for mild food. It also appears in basic terms about geography and wildlife, such as น้ำจืด “fresh water” and ปลาน้ำจืด “freshwater fish.” In other contexts, it can describe faded colors or jokes and stories that feel flat.

Caution

For food, จืด mainly means bland or insufficiently seasoned; it is not a general equivalent of ไม่อร่อย, “not delicious.” If only one taste is weak, a specific expression such as หวานน้อย, “less sweet,” or ไม่เผ็ด, “not spicy,” is clearer. For feelings or relationships that gradually weaken, จืดจาง is generally more natural than จืด by itself.
