บิล is a very common loanword from English “bill.” Its central idea is a document or record showing an amount to be paid and, often, a breakdown of the charges. It is used for restaurant checks, utility and phone bills, and business billing. Common combinations include จ่ายบิล “pay a bill,” วางบิล “submit a bill for payment,” and บิลค่าไฟ “electricity bill.” It can refer to either paper or electronic bills. The usual classifier is ใบ, as in บิลสองใบ, “two bills.”
Usage
It is commonly used when asking for the check at a restaurant or hotel, checking and paying utility or phone charges, and submitting bills to clients in business settings.
Caution
For an official receipt proving that payment has been made, use ใบเสร็จรับเงิน rather than บิล. Also, unlike English “bill,” Thai บิล does not normally mean a banknote or a proposed law.
