It is therefore commonly used figuratively for preparing favorable conditions. Common patterns include ปูทางไปสู่ + a result or goal (“pave the way toward”), ปูทางให้ + a person or event + verb, and ปูทางสำหรับ + noun (“lay the groundwork for”). Usage

In a phrase such as ปูทางเดินด้วยอิฐ (“lay a walkway with bricks”), the structure is normally ปู + ทางเดิน, not the compound ปูทาง. For literal paving, Thai generally names the surface, as in ปูถนน, ปูพื้น, or ปูทางเดิน. As a dictionary expression, ปูทาง is best learned primarily in its figurative sense.
