Explanation

รู้สึก centers on an internal awareness of an emotion, physical sensation, or personal impression. It is a neutral, standard verb used widely in both conversation and writing. A common pattern is รู้สึก followed by a word describing a state: รู้สึกดี means “feel good,” while รู้สึกเหนื่อย means “feel tired.” In natural English, the translation does not always need to emphasize the act of feeling. The pattern รู้สึกว่า followed by a clause introduces a subjective impression: “feel that ...” or “have the impression that ....” For practical purposes, รู้สึก is best learned as a single verb. The fixed expression รู้สึกตัว means to be conscious, regain consciousness, or become aware of oneself.

Usage

It is frequently used when talking about moods, emotions, health, tiredness, pain, temperature, and other personal sensations. It also appears when giving a subjective reaction to a person or event or asking how someone feels about something. In medical or accident-related contexts, รู้สึกตัว is used to discuss whether someone is conscious or has regained consciousness.

Caution

Do not use รู้สึก for every instance of English “think.” Use คิดว่า for a considered opinion or judgment; รู้สึกว่า is more appropriate for an emotional response, intuition, or subjective impression. When explicitly naming something that is perceived, Thai often uses รู้สึกถึง followed by a noun. For example, รู้สึกถึงความเปลี่ยนแปลง means “sense a change.”
