Explanation
ดนตรี is a standard, neutral noun used in both everyday conversation and educational or artistic contexts. Common combinations include ฟังดนตรี “listen to music,” เล่นดนตรี “play music,” and เรียนดนตรี “study music.” A type or genre can follow it, as in ดนตรีไทย “traditional Thai music” and ดนตรีคลาสสิก “classical music.” ดนตรี is not normally used to count individual works. Use เพลง for particular songs or pieces, as in หนึ่งเพลง “one song/piece” and สองเพลง “two songs/pieces.”
Usage
Used when discussing musical tastes and hobbies, listening or performing, music education, music-related work, and events. It also commonly appears when talking about live performances and music for films or stage productions.
