Explanation
The core image of สนาม is a defined or open space in which people, objects, or forces are active. On its own, it often refers to a field, sports ground, court, or similar area. It frequently combines with a word describing its purpose: สนามฟุตบอล is a soccer field, สนามสอบ is an exam venue, and สนามบิน is an airport. The expression ลงสนาม literally means to go onto the field. It can also mean to compete, take part in a contest, or enter an arena such as politics. In scientific language, สนาม also means a field in which a force acts, as in สนามแม่เหล็ก “magnetic field” and สนามไฟฟ้า “electric field.”
Usage
สนาม is common in everyday discussions of school grounds, sports facilities, courts, and playgrounds. It also appears in basic facility names such as “airport” and “exam venue.” In news and public discussion, it is often used for entering a match, an election, politics, or battle.
Caution
สนาม does not cover every meaning of “field.” An academic field or branch is usually สาขา, while a professional circle or industry may be วงการ. Also, an airport is สนามบิน, not simply สนาม.
