Learning notes
Explanation
รปภ. is formed from รักษาความปลอดภัย, meaning “to maintain security” or “to keep safe.” In everyday use, it usually stands for พนักงานรักษาความปลอดภัย or เจ้าหน้าที่รักษาความปลอดภัย and refers to a security guard. It is commonly seen at condominiums, offices, malls, schools, hospitals, parking lots, and gated communities. It can refer to a person by itself, although คน รปภ. is also used. Guards are counted with คน: รปภ. สองคน means “two security guards.” In phrases such as งาน รปภ. (“security work”) and ฝ่าย รปภ. (“security department”), it can also label the guard service or security function. The standard written form includes the final period, although รปภ without one is common in informal writing.
Usage
It is used when asking about building access, parking, vehicle entry, lost property, or suspicious items. It also commonly appears in job advertisements, duty schedules, and signs around buildings.
Caution
รปภ. normally refers to a guard assigned to a particular property or facility, not a police officer (ตำรวจ). When addressing a guard directly, it is usually more courteous to begin with พี่ครับ/พี่คะ or คุณครับ/คุณคะ rather than calling out the abbreviation itself.
